Lynn University Student Earns National Spotlight at ESPY Awards

BOCA RATON, Fla. — Lynn University is once again in the national spotlight as one of its standout students prepares to receive a prestigious honor at the 2025 ESPY Awards. Ian Waite, an inspiring student leader at Lynn University, has been selected for the Billie Jean King Youth Leadership Award, celebrating young changemakers who use sports to make a difference.

Bigger Than Sports: A Mission Born at Lynn University

Growing up in Pittsburgh, Waite excelled as a three-sport athlete and dreamed of going pro. But when he arrived at Lynn University, he realized his purpose was bigger than sports alone.

“As a freshman at Lynn University, I saw a chance to build something that would outlast my playing days,” Waite shared. That vision turned into Bigger Than Sports (BTS) — a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting underserved students and student-athletes.

Transforming Lives Through Mentorship

Waite’s nonprofit, founded at Lynn University, has already changed lives across the Boca Raton community and beyond. One example is Lenard Hart, a local high school student from Delray Beach who says BTS gave him the confidence to pursue higher education.

“Education always scared me,” Hart said. “But with BTS and Lynn University’s support, I learned to believe in myself. Now I’m headed to St. Thomas University on a scholarship.”

Billie Jean King Youth Leadership Award: A Major Milestone

On July 16, Waite will travel from Lynn University to Los Angeles to stand among sports legends at the 2025 ESPY Awards. The Billie Jean King Youth Leadership Award honors young people who harness the power of sport to create social change.

“It still feels surreal,” Waite said. “I keep asking my team to pinch me. Representing Lynn University and our community at the ESPYs is an incredible honor.”

A Proud Moment for Lynn University

Lynn University has a long-standing reputation for nurturing student leaders who make a real difference. Waite’s story is another testament to the university’s commitment to empowering students beyond academics.

Located in Boca Raton, Lynn University attracts students from across the globe who are eager to innovate, lead, and serve. Stories like Waite’s prove that at Lynn University, students find a platform to launch ideas that benefit communities far beyond campus.

What’s Next for Bigger Than Sports?

Looking ahead, Waite plans to expand Bigger Than Sports with new partnerships and outreach programs nationwide. He wants to ensure every student, no matter their background, has access to mentorship and the confidence to thrive.

“This is just the beginning,” Waite said. “Thanks to Lynn University, BTS is growing, and so is our impact.”

Lynn University’s Commitment to Future Leaders

As Waite prepares for the ESPYs, the entire Lynn University community is celebrating his milestone. For future students, his journey is proof that Lynn University offers more than an education — it offers opportunities to lead, serve, and inspire.

Long before Edgar Wright’s The Running Man hits theaters this week, the director of Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz had been thinking about making it. He read the original 1982 novel by Stephen King (under his pseudonym Richard Bachman) as a boy and excitedly went to theaters in 1987 to see the film version, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. Wright enjoyed the adaptation but was a little let down by just how different it was from the novel. Years later, after he’d become a successful… Source link
