Many WhatsApp users are reporting receiving missed calls from unknown international numbers, and the calls are often followed by scam messages. The scam messages claim to offer part-time jobs where individuals can earn money by liking YouTube videos and sending screenshots to the scammers.
Some users who have responded to the messages claim that they are then asked to join a Telegram group or click on a link, which can give scammers access to their phones and personal information.
Experts advise users to never open links or share personal information with unknown sources and to block any unfamiliar numbers. They also suggest reporting any suspicious numbers to WhatsApp to help prevent the spread of these scams.
The scale of these scams is not yet known, but WhatsApp has already taken steps to ban a large number of accounts involved in these activities. According to WhatsApp’s transparency report, between March 1, 2023 and March 31, 2023, 4,715,906 accounts were banned, with 1,659,385 of them being proactively banned before any reports from users.
As the use of messaging apps continues to rise, users need to remain vigilant against the growing number of scams and fraudulent activities. It’s important to always verify the identity of the sender before responding to messages and to report any suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities.
