Government is expected to issue new standards for EV batteries within the next month

Following fires involving electric vehicles (EVs) in the country, the Centre is reportedly planning to release new EV battery standards within a month.

According to Mint, the Ministry of Road Transport has already sent the draft standards to industry stakeholders for consultation. According to the report, the draft report also includes the recommendations of a committee formed by the ministry in response to multiple instances of electric vehicles catching fire in recent months. The BIS will also be involved in the development of standards and the testing of lithium-ion batteries. The testing agency will inspect electric two- and three-wheelers for key parameters such as energy consumption, net power, and other metrics.
