OpenAI is gearing up to introduce a new AI model called GPT-4.1, which is expected to be revealed as soon as next week, according to a report by The Verge. This upgraded version of GPT-4o will be accompanied by two lighter models—GPT-4.1 Mini and GPT-4.1 Nano. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman had previously mentioned plans to roll out the o3 reasoning model and o4 mini, both of which may also debut alongside GPT-4.1.
As part of its evolving product lineup, OpenAI has confirmed that it will begin phasing out the existing GPT-4 model on April 30. The company noted in a changelog (via TechCrunch) that GPT-4o has consistently outperformed GPT-4 in areas such as writing, coding, STEM tasks, and general instruction-following. Given its superior capabilities and recent enhancements in conversational flow and problem-solving, GPT-4o is being positioned as the natural successor. However, GPT-4 will still be accessible through the API.
In another significant development, OpenAI has introduced a memory feature in ChatGPT, allowing the chatbot to remember past user interactions to provide more personalized responses. This enhancement makes ChatGPT more helpful for writing, learning, and getting tailored advice. Users still have the option to disable memory or switch to temporary chats for privacy.
Additionally, OpenAI has enhanced GPT-4o with built-in image generation abilities, enabling it to create more nuanced visuals. This feature recently gained popularity online, with users sharing highly detailed, Studio Ghibli-style images generated by the model.
