Indian government is negotiating with Google Play to prevent lending apps from accessing user data

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) is reportedly in talks with Google Play Store to restrict lending apps from accessing user data in order to reduce malpractices by digital lending apps.

According to sources in the ministry, some officials are pushing for broad restrictions on such apps, while others believe the issues can only be addressed on a case-by-case basis. According to the report, MeitY is considering legal provisions to limit app access to only the data required for their operations. MeitY officials are also investigating why such apps require access to users’ contact information, media, and messages.
