WhatsApp, telecom department join forces to combat online fraud and spam

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has partnered with WhatsApp to launch a security campaign aimed at combating online fraud and spam. As part of this collaboration, the two entities will work together to educate citizens on identifying and reporting suspicious fraudulent messages.

According to an official statement, the DoT has teamed up with WhatsApp to expand Meta’s security initiative, ‘Stay Safe from Scams’, to raise awareness and curb digital fraud. The partnership is expected to enhance efforts in tackling cybercrime, which has seen a significant rise in recent years.

Meta’s Global Policy Chief Joel Kaplan and India’s Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia discussed the effectiveness of the ongoing collaboration between the telecom department and Meta in fighting online threats.

WhatsApp is leveraging data from the Digital Intelligence Platform (DIP)—a DoT initiative that enables real-time intelligence sharing with over 550 stakeholders, including banks and law enforcement agencies. This system plays a key role in detecting and addressing misuse of telecom resources.

India has witnessed a surge in cybercrime, with millions falling victim to scams, leading to financial losses worth crores of rupees. A rising trend of ‘digital arrests’—where cybercriminals use WhatsApp voice and video calls to extort victims—has become a major concern. The DoT’s collaboration with WhatsApp aims to curb such digital crimes significantly.

While telecom operators and the DoT have taken various measures to tackle spam calls and online fraud, this partnership marks another step in strengthening digital security and safeguarding users from cyber threats.

Long before Edgar Wright’s The Running Man hits theaters this week, the director of Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz had been thinking about making it. He read the original 1982 novel by Stephen King (under his pseudonym Richard Bachman) as a boy and excitedly went to theaters in 1987 to see the film version, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. Wright enjoyed the adaptation but was a little let down by just how different it was from the novel. Years later, after he’d become a successful… Source link
