Minister of state (MoS) for electronics and IT Jitin Prasada has said that the Centre is planning to set up data and artificial intelligence (AI) labs in tier II and III cities across the country.
He further added that the government has taken up eight projects for safe usage of AI.
IndiaAI, an independent business division under the Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), is collaborating with National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT) to set up 27 data labs, MoS Prasada added.
All states and union territories are asked to submit their nominated list of Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs)/Polytechnics located in the tier II and III cities to set up these data labs.
“All the 36 states and Union Territories (UTs) have been requested to submit their nominated list of Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs)/Polytechnics located in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities for the setting up of data labs. Additionally, IndiaAI in collaboration with NIELIT plans to establish 27 data labs in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities across the country,” Prasada said.
Additional Secretary of MeitY Abhishek Singh in an interaction with Inc42 in October said, “With the right tools, computing power, and datasets, Indian innovators can create real magic.”
He also added that the risk of not investing in AI is greater than the risk of investing in it.
To foster innovation in AI, MeitY through the IndiaAI Mission launched the AI Innovation Challenge in September which received numerous submissions across the sectors and challenge statements.
Further, the IndiaAI Datasets Platform to streamline access to high-quality, non-personal datasets to enable AI innovation will go live by January, said National eGovernance Division (NeGD) chief executive Nand Kumarum.
India is home to more than 100 GenAI startups and these startups have raised more than $600 Mn since 2019. Spearheading this transition are names like SarvamAI and Krutrim, which are focused on building Indic LLMs.
